We kicked off September with an inspiring lecture by Ms. Toshiko Kinoshita. Participants explored the challenges of preserving Japan's historical homes amidst a market that often favours new construction.

With care they can become an established and integral aspect of the urban and cultural fabric, either as wild and outlandish architectural expressions or as subtle elements of the streetscape, unobtrusive but there when needed. At AIA Japan, we inaugurated the year 2024 in January with our new President, Yumiko Yamada. For our members, we’ve organized enriching experiences, including visits to architecture galleries, beer nights and lecture series. Additionally, our secretary for 2024, Tom Bader, represented us at the Leadership Summit in Washington DC.

A multifaceted event organized by AIA International this July celebrated Japan’s leading role in architectural and urban renewal, and international collaboration. The five days in central Tokyo and Osaka treated attendees and delegates from AIA and ASSC (Architectural Society of Shanghai China) to talks by esteemed guest speakers and a landmark signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two associations. In addition, a variety of guided walking tours showcased Tokyo and Osaka.

The final virtual lecture of the year was by Suguru Watanabe and Keiko Onohara of Kengo Kuma and Associates, presenting their recent work “The Kadokawa Culture Museum”. The presentation included a complete walk-through of the process of making the gigantic stone-clad museum, from its conceptual stages to completion.
