Adaptive reuse has gained acceptance as a planning solution, opting to revitalize existing structures over building from the ground up. Once a concerted architectural intervention takes shape, there’s a real possibility for something great to materialize and transform the community.

The Porto Conference, April 21 – 24, 2022 was a great success. Thanks to the Planning Team for the superb experience: Ray Spano, Pedro Balonas, Teresa Vasconcelos Bento, Pedro Petracchi and Elizabeth Heudebourg! More than 65 AIA members and guests attended the conference from all over Europe and North America including Honolulu.

The AIA Continental Europe Chapter held its own Virtual Conference: Building for Resilience over 3 days on November 18-20, 2021. This conference focused on three strands - space, education and technology - highlighted projects whose innovative practices in these areas exemplified resilience, and considered how architects can connect the dots between the three.

A lot has happened this year, though a lot more was planned, but unfortunately as the COVID-19 pandemic spread around the world, our plans were cut short.
Two conferences were planned. The Porto Spring conference was finalized and the registration ready to open, but as the pandemic spread, the Board had to take the difficult decision to postpone it. The same fate followed the Cork Fall conference.
