You can join us on-line for the panel discussion, or in-person in Ho Chi Minh City!

This event is aimed at practitioners from the fields of architecture, interior design and related design disciplines and will serve as a platform for dialogue and discussion on the practical aspects of sustainability, from the use of materials and net zero carbon mitigation strategies to the adoption of global sustainability approaches in the local context of Southeast Asia and Vietnam.

Experts from global and local architecture firms, academia, developers and operators will share their expertise and experience on this topic, and ensure that attendees gain valuable insights into the practice of sustainability. We will also offer tours of buildings and offices and all participants will have the opportunity to interact with industry professionals to foster collaborations and partnerships for future projects.

AIA Canada - Navigating Toward Zero: Transforming Community Recreation Facilities for a Sustainable Future

Arena and aquatic facilities are often the most recognizable and significant public buildings in many communities. Given their high occupant loads, long operational hours and inherently large volumes, these buildings face significant challenges as our industry accepts the responsibility of steering the built world towards a zero-emissions future. These facilities must also sustain challenging interior environments that require specially treated air, water, and ice—all of which are delivering tightly regulated conditions regardless of exterior temperatures. This presentation will discuss strategies to lower embodied and operational carbon and reduce operational energy in this most essential of community building types. The session will focus on two case studies: the Western North York Community Centre, on track to be one of Canada’s first Net-Zero Energy aquatics-based zero-carbon project, and the King Township Recreation Centre, which is the first facility in Canada combining arenas and aquatics to receive CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building Design certification. We will describe the challenges and opportunities encountered on our path to a Zero Carbon future.

Speaker Bios

Jeanne Ng is a Senior Principal at MJMA Architecture & Design. She has been instrumental in furthering MJMA’s architecture and community engagement goals since 1997. She has taken a key role in many of the firm’s most notable community-focused projects that foster social cohesion, such as the Regent Park (Pam McConnell) Aquatic Centre, the Audley Recreation Centre & Library, and the Wellesley Community Centre and St. James Town Library. A champion of sustainability, she has led research initiatives like MJMA’s Embodied Carbon Benchmarking Study for community recreation centres, and is the Project Principal on the Western North York Community Centre—which is on target to be one of Canada’s first Net-Zero aquatic-based community centres.

Marc Downing, a Principal at MJMA, has been practicing his highly environmentally sensitive approach to architecture—first developed during the pursuit of a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture, both at the University of Waterloo. As a core member of MJMA’s community and recreation design team, Marc has led arena projects across Canada. His projects are typically part of a larger public precinct, forming relationships to existing buildings at the civic scale. Marc’s work is rooted in the idea that assembly space is always malleable; the challenges of multiple program types necessitate hybrid, multi-use design solutions. He is the Project Principal on the King Township-Wide Recreation Complex which is the first public aquatic and arena facility to achieve Zero Carbon Design certification in Canada.

The built environment has a vital role to play in responding to climate and biodiversity emergencies. There is a pressing need for all the industry professionals to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills to design and deliver built environments that respond to increasing demands of our world, while ensuring holistic, sustainable outcomes are consistently achieved.

In this session, sustainability expert and author Mina Hasman will introduce her new book - the ‘RIBA Climate Guide’ - created to help build knowledge and skills around the climate literacy mandatory competence requirements defined by the RIBA in 2021.

The RIBA Climate Guide maps out the essential background knowledge around climate science, international agreements, legislations, commitments, and roadmaps, with the aim to equip all built-environment professionals with the key information required to mitigate impacts of climate change in their day-to-day practice.

Contextualising the climate emergency and the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 within the built environment landscape, the Guide is structured around the six, core themes of the ‘Climate Framework’ which include Human Factors, Circular Economy, Energy and Carbon, Water, Ecology and Biodiversity, Connectivity and Transport. Uniquely, the book highlights interlinkages that exist among all of these priority areas to enable stakeholders across the built environment value chain to make holistically informed decisions.

The RIBA Climate Guide presents a collection of short, building- and urban-scale case studies, which illustrate real-life applications of design strategies and industry-wide tools, as well as standards that are deployed in climate-conscious built environments all around the world.

AIA Taipei - Practicing Globally and Locally - Becoming a Licensed Architect

The AIA Taipei Young Architects/Next Gen Committee is hosting its inaugural event to address and support key challenges faced by young and emerging professionals in Taiwan. This event will feature talks, seminars, and gatherings aimed at providing valuable insights and resources.

The event will include presentations by Patricia Ramallo, the Assistant Vice President of NCARB, along with Melody (Hsiang-Yi) Ho and Jason Ouyang, two U.S.-licensed architects. These speakers will share their experiences and expertise in becoming licensed architects in the United States. They will discuss the opportunities and processes involved in pursuing licensure in the United States, and provide resources for the ARE (Architect Registration Examination) and AXP (Architectural Experience Program).

Aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the licensure process and its benefits for professional development, this session will conclude with a discussion on the significance and applicability of licensure, particularly in the context of practicing in Taiwan and Asia.
