Speaker

Dr. Nubras Samayeen

Description

Of the Western design professionals who played a key role in establishing modernity in South Asia, Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974), the American Modernist, is one of the most important ones. From the mid to late 20th century, Kahn designed two key institutions in the region. One is the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (1962-1972), India, and the other is the National Assembly Complex (constructed 1963-1982) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Taking Kahn’s Assembly Complex in Dhaka as the focus, this lecture will present distinctive instrumentality of architecture and landscape vis-a-vis holistic built environment, in the formation of a nation’s identity in the post-colonial (after 1947) and post-independence (after 1971) eras. His work not only demonstrates a merging of Western modernist architecture with Eastern cultural elements, but it also serves as a symbolic representation of a newly independent nation striving to define itself both internally and on the world stage.  While designing the Complex, Kahn was inspired by the region’s deltaic landscape and its longstanding influences on the culture. The Complex itself appears to float on a constructed, artificial lake and the other key buildings abut the lake, thereby granting the entire site a sense of dynamic interplay with the lake and surrounding landscape.  Accompanying the focus on water, there are other elements of the design that Kahn intended as nationally symbolic: the immense lawn, the basic geometric shapes, the gardens, and the open plazas.  These spaces, while vast and monumental, are also meant to be accessible to the public, encouraging inclusivity and fostering democratic engagement. Though many of the inspirations of the architectural design expressions came from the Western culture, the Assembly Complex was intended as a historical and cultural emblem that would help in the formation of democracy for the newly found, independent nation, East Pakistan ( later Bangladesh).  Kahn therefore envisioned an amalgam of sensibilities: modernist yet traditional, Western yet Bengali (Bangladesh’s culture), open yet monumental, forward-looking yet reverential.  The final result was a magnum opus; it reflects Kahn’s vision for a national space that was open and egalitarian, yet at the same time, imbued with symbolic weight. Such complexity permeates not only the design but the entire post-colonial history of the country and South Asia region.

Speaker

Paul Marquez, Excel Dryer Inc., Cornerstone Partner of AIA

Description

This course is designed to help you consider what it takes to design restrooms that are sustainable and safe, without breaking the bank. Commercial restrooms have never played a more vital role than they do today in supporting occupant health and safety. In addition to supporting the basic biological functions of building occupants, the increased focus on viral and pollutant exposure is driving more and more people into bathrooms to wash and thoroughly dry their hands. This course walks through the basic considerations in designing commercial restrooms to support efficient and effective hand washing, highlighting sustainability, safety, and savings. Along the way, this course will identify the potential use of high speed, energy efficient hand dryers to satisfy the requirements of current third-party rating systems, such as LEED v4.1, the WELL Health-Safety Rating, and TRUE Zero Waste.

CES Credits - 1 LU for AIA Members

Speaker

Letitia Silk, National Director of Business Development & Growth, The Architek Group of Companies

Description

With most of the time being spent in offices or moving within dense urban areas surrounded by tall tempered glass buildings, the obviousness of heat island effect and the raising of the overall temperature of the earth is becoming more and more apparent as each year goes by.

This presentation will go into detail about several design solutions to achieve living building systems, speaking to the essence of sustainability, along with designing and building best practices that ensure longer life cycles. “Our Living Building Design-Build Toolbox” will examine the emergent adaptation of biophilic design and living architecture, and the benefits when specifically speaking to Green Wall Facades, Living Wall Systems, Site Water Management, Green Roof Systems, and Permavoid (Blue Roofs).  Speaking to the benefits of Green Façade systems, Wire Trellis and Web-Netting, and hybrid living wall systems, we will examine what designs entail, and the benefits they bring to different typologies for buildings (eg.) Extended lifespan of a roofing membrane, promotes biodiversity, reduces surface and building temperatures, and creates an amenity in an unused space.  Our includes certified Green Roof Professionals (GRP), where a brief description of roof system options and build-up systems will be highlighted in a wide variety of project typologies across Canada demonstrating their unique design features, and then proceed into detail about our design assist process, delivery, and installation practices, and outline the maintenance program specific to each project.

Description

AIA Canada is excited to partner with Passive House Canada to offer this four-part course to AIA members.

Buildings shape the lives, health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. Unfortunately, too many of the buildings across Canada often have significant problems: from drafty building envelopes, to mold and moisture problems, to inefficient HVAC systems. The Passive House standard has evolved over the years and now includes powerful tools, guidelines and certification pathways which can assist design and construction professionals seeking to retrofit existing buildings to be more comfortable, healthier and use less energy. This in-depth seminar will introduce participants to the Passive House retrofit ‘EnerPHit’ standards and highlight some examples of successful Passive House retrofits from around the world. We will discuss the basic principles of Passive House design, including thermal comfort, energy efficiency, durability and health – as well as some of the common tools and techniques for achieving these goals on retrofits. We’ll also review how the EnerPHit standard fits into the larger efforts at decarbonization across Canada. Anyone looking to rehabilitate an existing building will benefit from this course, and in particular this course is a crucial first step for anyone looking to certify a building as a Passive House EnerPHit retrofit.

Description

AIA Canada is excited to to partner with Passive House Canada to offer this four-part course to AIA members. Get your 12 AIA credits with 12 HSW to satisfy your annual credit requirements before the end of the year!

This is an interactive workshop that teaches cost-effective planning and design of affordable, low-emission, mid-rise, multi-unit, wood-framed housing. This four-part workshop presents design problems common to multi-unit buildings, followed by solutions that have worked in previous high-performance projects. These solutions are organized into “patterns” using a format adapted from A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander (et al). The patterns presented in this workshop are drawn from the hundreds of affordable multi-unit buildings constructed to the Passive House standard worldwide, because this is the largest cohort of affordable, low-emission, mid-rise, multi-unit housing. While these solutions are taken from Passive House buildings, they are applicable for residential building design to meet Step 4 of the BC Energy Step Code, as well as multi-unit buildings aiming for similar low-TEDI or not-zero energy standards. Likewise, while this workshop focuses on affordable housing, the patterns apply equally to market- and luxury-housing projects. RDH is consulting to or certifying more than six million square feet of Passive House. The course is an attempt to condense what we have learned from those projects, with a focus on how to construct multi-family passive house for less.

Course Dates

Day 1: Wednesday November 9, 2022
Day 2: Wednesday November 16, 2022
Day 3: Wednesday November 23, 2022
