AIA Canada Update - July 2022

Rommy Rodriguez, Olimpia Pantelimon, Dr. Adam Pantelimon, Lara Presber and Dora Ng at A’22 in Chicago

AIA Canada Society continues to reach out and expand on our initiatives to promote services to our members. In addition to partnership with Canadian Architect magazine (which features a quarterly profile of AIA Canada Journal), we are partnering with the Architect’s Newspaper to provide members with a discount for attending the Facades+ Toronto event coming up on July 21.

Lara Presber (President), Dora Ng (Vice President), Dr. Adam Pantelimon (Past President) and Rommy Rodriguez (Executive Assistant) got together at the A’22 AIA Conference in Chicago in June. It was a great event to meet and to bond with board members of AIA International as well as other AIA members from around the world, through various sessions including the AIA International AGM, AIA International Design Awards, International Reception and the informal dinner.

At the AIA International Spring Virtual Conference in May, AIA Canada hosted a virtual session - How robots are changing modern commerce and reducing carbon output through warehouse design. Lara Presber discussed warehouse automation with our speaker Scott Gravelle at Attabotics. This virtual session and other continuing education webinars organized by AIA Canada are available on demand at the AIA International website.

Dr. Adam Pantelimon, chair of the AIA Public Architects Knowledge Committee (PAKC), also attended the PA’s Symposium, “The Climate of Public Architecture” on April 7 and 8, at the AIA HQ in Washington, D.C., the first public event at the AIA facilities after the closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The AIA PAKC promotes excellence in public architecture and enhances the role of the public architect as an essential element in civic engagement and the sustainable, resilient and inclusive development of the public realm and facilities. Enhancing AIA’s public mission, the PA Committee is one of the twenty-one ways to make an impact through the AIA Knowledge Communities. The PA Committee engage closely with other AIA organizational structures, such as the Government Advocacy Committee, the AIA Strategic Council, the AIA International Practice Committee, AIA International chapter, and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME).

In July 18 to 22, Dr. Adam Pantelimon will attend the AIA Knowledge Leadership Assembly (KLA). The first day of KLA is a very important opportunity for KC leaders to offer input and feedback to the AIA’s Member Voice Task Force. To learn more about the work of the MVTF, visit here.

The Task Force early-on targeted KLA as a crucial touchpoint to hear from some of the AIA’s most passionate and engaged leaders. The first day of KLA will also provide an opportunity to hear from AIA Senior Staff and Elected Leadership as well ask questions. The second day of KLA will provide KC leadership a chance to look ahead and plan for 2023, while also providing an opportunity to set-up conversations with other KC leadership, Board Knowledge Committee liaison or with other relevant AIA leadership.
