Description

The Blue is an experimental transformation of a 50-year-old commercial building in central Taipei into a public art piece/functioning hotel for a Taiwan-based affordable hotel chain. Originally built in 1970 as an insurance office, the ten-story, 2,000 m² building was retrofitted to explore low-cost, low-carbon renovation strategies common in the Global South. The newly refurbished hotel features 56 guest rooms and a free art space on the GF. The project minimised carbon emissions by upcycling waste materials from the original structure into new artworks and installations. Retaining much of the existing fabric and rejuvenating components instead of demolishing them ensured sustainability while lending the interior a raw, natural aesthetic. This marks the most ambitious project under the ‘Emotionalist’ initiative, an international art/architecture movement reflecting on humanity in an AI-dominated era. Inspired by the Taiwan Blue Magpie, the building’s striking blue hue comes from locally sourced iron oxide.

Speaker

Jess Hrivnak, RIBA Lead on Sustainability

Moderator: Mark Breeze, AIA UK Sustainability chair

Description

Discover the essential elements of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS), launched in September 2024 to unify the approach to net zero carbon in the built environment. Join us to understand how to leverage this comprehensive and collaborative standard to design, verify, and future-proof your projects, and dispel any greenwash claims. The Standard, created for the industry by the industry, provides robust, transparent guidelines to achieve Net Zero Carbon Aligned Buildings, and addresses upfront carbon, operational efficiency, and performance alignment with UK carbon reduction targets.

Jess Hrivnak will share how to use this free-to-access framework to initiate impactful change.

Alastair Browning, Niall McLaughlin Architects

Description

Join us for a virtual tour of Saltmarsh House by Niall McLaughlin Architects, a house overlooking a tidal salt marsh in the north east of the Isle of Wight.

Conceived as a delicate steel frame that floats above a meadow of wild grasses, the pavilion houses a long dining hall framed by three smaller spaces: a kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom.

The building is organised around a repeating 5m x 5m grid of slender quadripartite columns that frame views and support a lightweight trussed roof structure. This large overhanging roof canopy unites the four volumes and forms a perimeter verandah. The glass wall passes through the centre of each column, revealing the building skeleton to both the inside and the outside.

The metal frame is painted in a rich golden and the roof is lined with copper. Together with the weathered silver deck, these materials reflect the warm hues and cool tones of the surrounding pasture and marshland.

The AIA UK Technical Lectures are back! Join us to learn about Fologram and their mixed reality solutions.

When: Wednesday 15 June 2022 @ 07:00 (Eastern US Time)/ 12:00 (UK time)
CES Credits - Estimated 1.0 LU for AIA Members

Speaker

Gwyllim Jahn, Co-founder and Creative Director of Fologram

Moderator: Mat Heitel, AIA

Description

Gwyllim Jahn is the co-founder and creative director of Fologram, a Melbourne-based startup building mixed reality software solutions for architecture, engineering and construction. Fologram’s software overlays physical environments with precise, interactive digital models that can be used for rapid prototyping of mixed reality applications to solve design and construction challenges. Gwyllim will share how Fologram’s clients and partners have identified high value use cases and immediate opportunities for mixed reality to reduce construction time, cost and risk through several recently completed case study projects. These include work by All Brick to replace traditional 2D drawings with interactive, shared and in-situ holographic models describing all construction stages of the brickwork in the Royal Hobart Hospital, examples of clients within manufacturing and offsite construction industries using Twinbuild for precise setout and QA applications, and the effective use of analogue tools and traditional steam-bending techniques to fabricate the complex double-curved structure of the Tallinn Architecture Biennial pavilion.

Rhino users are encouraged to download and install the Fologram for Rhino plugin and the Fologram for Mobile app in order to experiment with streaming their own models from Rhino and Grasshopper as there will be time for a brief Q&A around user experience at the end of the presentation. Anyone with access to a HoloLens 2 is also encouraged to try Twinbuild.
