AIA Shanghai Update - July 2022

Fighting Climate Change

On June 9, we hosted Fighting Climate Change: Biophilic Environmental Design with Wood, an online lecture focusing on the benefits of specifying wood to fight climate change. Our speakers, James Lu and Filippo Gabbiani, are two active practicing architects based in Shanghai. They shared with us their individual experiences through case studies demonstrating specific benefits of wood for new construction, structures, renovation, and interiors.

We appreciate the sponsorship of the American Hardwood Export Council. This event is one of three AIA seminars on the most sustainable building material sponsored by AHEC.

Staying Resilient

Our members in Shanghai have experienced a city-wide lockdown, which, began in early March in some neighborhoods and was expanded to the entire city in April.

On April 20, AIA Shanghai | Beijing presented an online workshop providing advice for maintaining mental health. The event was facilitated by Dr. George Hu, a clinical psychologist, the Chair of Mental Health at Shanghai United Family Pudong Hospital, and the President of the Shanghai International Mental Health Association. Lu Chen, HR Manager of JERDE in Shanghai, also participated in the discussion.

Christopher Chan of Moore Ruble Yudell, represented our chapter in the AIA International Spring Conference. On May 20, Mr. Chan led a session about Emerging Resilience and Future Society focusing on the response of higher education campuses to community concerns affecting security, health, environment, privacy, and an increasingly diverse student-body and faculty. During the session, he shared principles and lessons learned centered around a recently completed multi-disciplinary college of architecture and design. Kathy Zhu-Schleiss, our President, moderated this session.
