Event Description

Once Tokyo was called “Edo”, meaning “river mouth” or “creek”. The key to succeed in the development of Tokyo has always been river management in the vast Kanto Region as well as the Tokyo Area since the late 16th century. In the early 16th to mid 19th centuries, the Tokugawa shogunate first developed Edo as the political center to rule the whole of Japan. Then Nihonbashi was built over the river at the central commercial district in Edo as the traffic origin of roads and ship routes connecting whole Japan. The history of Nihonbashi has always been a mirror of Tokyo and its development.
