Event Description

As pioneers in the Design-Build delivery method, Epstein has a unique approach in unifying design, engineering and construction to provide flexible, cost-efficient and timely facilities for clients across the world. In this presentation, Edward S. Curley, Epstein’s director of architecture, and Jason Chandler, Epstein director of DesignBuild, will explain the benefits of Design-Build, address the perceived limitations of the delivery method as well as speak to how Epstein effectively utilizes Design-Build.

Edward Curley rejoined Epstein in 2019 as the firm’s director of architecture and interiors, where he is responsible for serving as the principal-in-charge for the firm’s design-led projects and ensuring the project delivery and design for those endeavors. Additionally, Ed directs the coordination of Epstein’s design staff and supervises all phases of design.

Ed’s architectural experience includes projects ranging from commercial buildings and residential developments to manufacturing facilities and municipal projects. In his prior professional experience, Ed has been responsible for day-to-day operations and supervising a design team’s daily performance for NEMA Chicago, a 76-story luxury rental apartment building located at the south end of Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois.

In addition to a wide range of design experience, Ed is also well-versed in the Design-Build project delivery method. Ed has helped manage Design-Build projects across the US for clients in the food and light manufacturing industries.

Ed initially joined Epstein in 2005 and was with the firm until 2015. 

Jason Chandler, who has been with Epstein since 2002, directs Epstein's Design-Build group where is he is responsible for the overall leadership, management and strategic direction of Epstein's construction group, including our Design-Build project delivery efforts. Prior to directing Epstein’s Design-Build group, Jason led Epstein’s project management team.

Epstein’s Design-Build group has been recognized for being one of the largest of its kind by publications like Building Design + Construction Magazine and Engineering News-Record. In recent years, Epstein’s Design-Build group has been responsible for the delivery of a variety of food and light manufacturing projects across the US totally nearly $1B in construction value.

Jason also has a wide range of experience with varied project types ranging from high profile museums like the S.C. Johnson Fortaleza Hall & The Commons to hospital renovations for the Department of Veterans Affairs to numerous national and international Design-Build industrial projects.'

Moderator: Tomoaki Tanaka has been active in education and research on architectural design, site design, and architectural planning. He is Professor of the Department of Architecture, School of Science and Technology at Meiji University. He served as a Deputy Director of the Headquarters of International Collaboration from 2012 to 2016 and serves as a President’s Staff from 2016 to 2020. Tanaka is also a practicing architect as a principal of FORMS. He is a registered architect in Japan and New York. He is a member of American Institute of Architects, and currently on the Board of Directors of Japan Chapter. He serves as 2022 AIAJ President. He also won Honorable Mention in 2018 and Award of Merit in 2008 in AIA Japan Design Award.

Moderator: Tetsuya Yaguchi has 20 years of professional experience as an architect/ urban designer working on a wide range of projects for private and public clients. He worked at AECOM San Francisco office as an associate Principal and worked on various types of projects in the United States, Asia, and Middle East countries.

Mr. Yaguchi currently holds an academic position at Waseda University and conducts theoretical research and urban design exercises that focus on sustaining and enhancing the built environment through understanding the physical, social, ecological, and technological underlying system of the cities as a whole. Mr. Yaguchi is a certified planner in the United States and a registered architect in Japan and California.
