Event Description
60 minutes interactive tour, questions allowed throughout the tour. There will be additional time provided before or after the guided tour to visit the exhibitions and other museum spaces.
Participants will learn about the London Design Museum which was founded by Sir Terence Conran in 1989 as a home for the UK design industry to come together and share what they are doing and to support the future of design. The museum was relocated to the present location in 2016 and was awarded European Museum of the year in 2018. The existing grade II listed Commonwealth Institute building stood empty for over a decade before it was transformed by John Pawson and his design team to address the needs of the modern Design Museum while still retaining its dynamic spatial quality. The masterplan was by OMA in collaboration with Allies and Morrison who refurbished the exterior. You will learn about how the design and the fit-out supports 2 temporary exhibit spaces, a permanent collection display, learning and design workshops, a library, an auditorium, shop, café, restaurant, and other functions. Participants will learn how the building supports sustainability and CO2 emission reduction goals of good design practices.
